Diabetes Therapies

The Toronto Clinic for Preventive Medicine offers various treatments that have helped people suffering from diabetes, which results from an insufficient supply of insulin from the pancreas.

Diabetes is a serious disease that adversely affects the functioning of the body. Patients often complain of low energy and being tired. Many find it difficult to control the disease.

Part of the problem is that diabetics often have blood circulation problems. When circulatory problems progress to a certain point, there is an increased risk of serious consequences like the possibility of having heart attack, going blind, losing a leg or developing kidney problems.

There are two types of diabetes. People with Type I diabetes are dependent on an external source of insulin (usually through injection). Those with Type II diabetes are usually able to control their condition through oral supplementation and a strict diet, although sometimes, due to a lack of proper attention, this can progress to Type I diabetes.

Among the causes of diabetes, whether Type I or Type II, are the following:

  • Genetic predisposition to get diabetes
  • Eating too much carbohydrates or severe over-consumption of alcohol, which can overwork and damage the pancreas
  • Virus or bacterial infection that damages the part of the pancreas that produces insulin
  • Malfunction of the liver, which normally produces a specific enzyme needed by the pancreas to make the insulin effective
  • Chemical over-exposure that puts the body under stress and blocks the proper functioning of the liver and pancreas
  • Trauma to the liver or pancreas from accidental physical injury

The Clinic's approach to helping diabetes patients recognizes that they have a completely different body metabolism compared with those not suffering from the disease.

After a full assessment, a customized program is developed for each patient that includes methods to balance the diet, provide nutritional supplementation (intravenous and oral), improve circulation (such as through chelation), and generally improve the functioning of the body and bring the debilitating effects of the disease under control.

While diabetes cannot be totally reversed, its impact on the body can definitely be minimized and alleviated.

Using an intelligent approach to the disease and a variety of advanced treatments, the clinic has helped both Type I and Type II diabetes patients to cope much better with diabetes and to improve their quality of life.
